Frequently Asked Questions

General

When I, Evan, was in the military and deployed to Iraq, Jxn was used as an abbreviation for my last name on the battle roster. It just kind of stuck.

We believe in science. We raise our livestock in what we would term an “organically minded” approach.  However, to be organic, we would not be able to prevent disease in our crops, forage, or livestock. We also believe in conservation of our soils. Being certified organic requires more tillage which can equal more erosion.

We’ve grown to the point that we needed some help. Sean has worked with us since early this summer. He has been a great addition to our farm, helping in all aspects. In a time when employees are hard to come by, we are blessed that he is willing to work hard.

Beef

We do not use hormones, antibiotics, ionophores, or any complex feed additives. If we do need to treat a sick animal, we will, but that animal will be marketed elsewhere.

This is a complex topic and not something we want to create division on. Our livestock are born and raised on pasture and grass, but finished on grass and grain. Grain = more marbling. Marbling = more flavor. In addition, we simply cannot provide enough acres of grass or guarantee the weather to provide enough grass for complete grass-fed beef.

The simple answer is, yes. However, the only vaccines we use are accepted by our All-Natural label. The reason for them is simple, to prevent unnecessary illness.  They are vaccinated before weaning which means a long time period before harvest.

We use crossbred beef cows and purebred Black Angus Bulls.

Our cows are crossbred beef cows (no dairy breed influence). They are mostly Angus crossed with Charolais, Hereford, and Maine Anjou. We use crossbred cows because of the genetic advantages of different breeds and the longevity and heartiness. Our bulls are registered Black Angus and we have been almost exclusively using bulls from Felton Angus Ranch in Montana. Our calves end up being about 95% black or black white face, some are white with black hides.
